As your wedding budget seems to expand, there are certain things that will need to be cut from your dream list; engagement photos don’t need to be included in this. As a photographer, I love when couples want to have engagement photos taken because it gives us a chance to get to know one another.
As a couple, you will have chosen your photographer with care because you like their style and their personality. An engagement shoot is a great way to experience their style first-hand as a preview of what it will be like on your wedding day. When you choose a photographer, you are not only buying into their style, but them as a person. It is important that you feel comfortable working with them and you enjoy their company because you will be working with them closely on your wedding day.
You may have previously met with your wedding photographer to get a feel of them as a person but, when you’re on a shoot and you’ve experienced their style, it’s a great way to chat to them about your expectations on your wedding day. You may have photo ideas that you’d like to try on the wedding day, but an engagement shoot is a great way to test these poses and see if you like them.
When I’m on an engagement shoot, I also take it as an opportunity to see if there’s any photos the couple would like. While your photographer will have their own style and ideas for great pictures, don’t hesitate to ask for a certain pose. Couples I have worked with have done this to some great results. When I was getting married, there was a certain pose that my husband wanted that we had at both our engagement and wedding shoots. It was one of his favourites from the day! As a photographer, I love when you take ownership of your photos.
Many couples have said to me that they’re really shy in front of the camera, and an engagement shoot has been a great way for them to relax. Often, the couples that warn me that they’re awkward in front of the camera are the ones that are suggesting poses by the end. It makes me so happy to be the one who can capture this time for them.
Engagement photos are also special because you can get some lovely photos of you in a very special place. You may opt to have your engagement photos in the place where he popped the question which is a lovely way to remember that special time. You’ll have the chance to step away from the stress of wedding plans and the weight of expectations, and just spend some quality time with you other half. Wedding photos are really special, but it’s sometimes just nice to have some photos of the two of you as you are.
Some couples may see it as a waste of time, and it’s another set of photos that will be put into a drawer and forgotten about. That doesn’t have to be the case because you can use your engagement photos for different parts of the day – they could be used on your invitations, in your guest book or in a slideshow of photos during the meal. If you’re being cost conscious, then look at the above as ways you could save some money.
I love it when couples take the time to have an engagement shoot. Don’t forget that when you book me as your wedding photographer, you also get a free one hour engagement shoot! It will be lots of fun! 😊
